Ohio's biggest hunting season of the year also has a huge economic impact on our area.
Muskingum County is one of the top deer-hunting counties in the state, with nearly 8,000 deer harvested each year. With more than 60,000 acres of public hunting land, many out-of-state hunters and their families are expected to flee to Southeastern Ohio for the week long event.
Marketing and Group Sales Manger for the Convention and Visitor's Bureau, Lori Kappes, said the bureau attends several trade shows throughout the year to promote Muskingum County as a top destination for hunting.
"We do fill our hotels and most of the cabins in the area with hunters, and also a lot of the restaurants see a spike around this time," Kappes said.
More than a half-million jobs in America are supported by hunters, and Ohio ranks 11th in the nation for the number of jobs associated with hunting-related industries.
Muskingum County is the 4th largest county in the state for deer harvest. However, hunting isn't just a big business Muskingum County, it's a leading economic force throughout the entire Southeastern Ohio region.
"It's just another way to get people to the area, and build the local economy, the sales tax, with people hunters spending money here locally," Kappes said.
In Muskingum County, there are five areas of public land available for hunting, and thousands of acres of private leases available.
