Fairfax, VA -(AmmoLand.com)-
At a time when it’s more important than ever to maintain the right of
the American people to keep and bear arms for self-defense, law
professor David S. Cohen is calling for repeal of the Second Amendment.
“Americans’
rights are in mortal danger,” he says, unless Hillary Clinton is
elected president and stacks the Supreme Court with progressive judges.
In the repeatedly discredited rag, Rolling Stone, Cohen writes,
“sometimes we just have to acknowledge that the Founders and the
Constitution are wrong. This is one of those times. . . . The Second
Amendment needs to be repealed because it is outdated, a threat to
liberty and a suicide pact.”
By “outdated,” Cohen means that the Framers of the Bill of Rights were unable to conceive of 19th
century semi-automatic firearm technology. “When the Second Amendment
was adopted in 1791, there were no weapons remotely like the
AR-15 assault rifle (sic),” he said.
However, as the late, great
Justice Antonin Scalia wrote in the Supreme Court’s decision in District
of Columbia v. Heller, “Just as the First Amendment protects modern
forms of communications and the Fourth Amendment applies to modern forms
of search, the Second Amendment extends, prima facie, to all
instruments that constitute bearable arms, even those that were not in
existence at the time of the founding.”
And in any case, there is
nothing outdated about the underlying principle of the Second Amendment:
to prohibit the government from interfering with the ability of people
to acquire, possess and develop proficiency with arms they might one day
need to defend themselves and their loved ones.
Cohen’s rant is
just one example of an astonishing amount of sheer nonsense that has
filled the Internet since the terrorist attack in Orlando. Anti-gun
politicians, and so-called opinion columnists and TV talking heads – who
pretend to be “experts” on every topic under the sun, but who in
reality know virtually nothing about even one topic – are confidently
calling the AR-15 an “automatic” weapon, a “military” weapon,” and a
“weapon of war,” and telling everyone that the most popular rifle in
America should be banned.
Of course, the First Amendment protects
the right of pundits to demonstrate that the size of their egos are only
matched by the depth of their ignorance on firearms and the Second
Amendment. And so it should be.
If history repeats itself, the
recent slew of half-baked, culture-war-based, ideologically-motivated,
attention-seeking statements against guns will only increase support for
the right to arms, and additional support may develop as people
increasingly realize that President Obama and Hillary Clinton, who are
urging gun bans, are the very politicians most responsible for the rise
of overseas terrorist groups who inspire and possibly direct evildoers
within our midst.
All the more reason for the American people to protect their right to protect themselves.

Stand Your Ground: Science and Science Fiction

Andrew Branca, the author of the “Law of Self Defense,” recently reviewed a study on racial bias and Florida’s Stand Your Ground (SYG) laws published in the Elsevier Social Science & Medicine. The study, “Race, law, and health: Examination of ‘Stand Your Ground’ (SYG) and defendant convictions in Florida” (Social Science & Medicine, Volume 142, October 2015, pages 194-201; pay-walled) makes troubling claims about racial bias and convictions.
The study’s authors conclude that a defendant was two times more likely to be convicted in a case that involved a white victim than a non-white victim; that the race of the victim was “a predictor of conviction of the defendant,” and that Florida’s SYG legislation “has a quantifiable racial bias.” The study’s abstract exhorts other states with SYG laws “to carry out similar analyses to see if their manifestations are the same as those in Florida, and all should remediate any injustices found.”
Are these “manifestations” of racial bias a matter of settled science? Does this study really provide evidence of unequal treatment under the law? Pulling back the curtain, Mr. Branca examined the underlying data used – a listing of cases compiled by the Tampa Bay Times, a Florida newspaper, “supplemented with available online court documents and/or news reports.” The study itself was based on a subset of 204 cases out of the newspaper’s entire dataset of 237. After a close analysis of every one of the 237 cases, Mr. Branca found that 181 (over 76 percent) did not qualify as SYG cases at all, based on the legal definition of the term. It follows that even if all of the 56 remaining cases were included in the study’s subset of 204, the vast majority of the subset (148 cases, over 70 percent) were not actually SYG cases. Accordingly, research conclusions drawn from the 204 cases as if they were all SYG cases arguably lack factual integrity and scientific reliability.
In response to these observations, the authors advised that they opted to use a definition of SYG – a legal concept – “as it has been used in the media around highly publicized cases (e.g., Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman) and not the legal definition” provided by Mr. Branca. Instead of evaluating SYG cases using the relevant definition applied by the Florida courts in determining guilt and convictions, the study employed a “definition” of cases “related to SYG” because, presumably, that’s how the newspaper staff decided to structure the original dataset. It’s helpful at this point to include a quote from Mr. Branca:
Surely it must be self-evident that whatever the impact of SYG on conviction rates, it can only be the “legal definition” as actually applied by the criminal justice system that could possibly have an effect, and that the “media definition” that is not applied by the criminal justice system (because it is not law) cannot have had any effect on conviction rates.
(His full response is expected to be published as a dissenting commentary regarding the study in a future issue of the Social Science & Medicine publication.)
Alleging a racial bias in the administration of justice is a grave charge and deserves a thoughtful, scrupulous and responsible analysis – particularly if the results are being used to justify efforts to “remediate any injustices” found to exist. We can hope for more objective analysis in the future.

Blomberg's Moms Attack Gun Rights in Another State on Their Hit List
***************** "None of those shootings would have been stopped by background checks, said Johnson, the key opponent of last year's bill."*********************************************
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — Fresh
off a victory in Washington state, a leading gun control group backed by
billionaire Michael Bloomberg is hoping to make Oregon its next prize
in a campaign to require gun sales to go through universal background
checks.
Everytown for
Gun Safety backed a voter-approved initiative in Washington last year
that made the state the 17th in the country to expand background checks
past the federal standard applying only to licensed gun dealers.
"This is our top priority," said the group's spokeswoman Erika Soto Lamb.
The
organization came out of a merger last year between Bloomberg's Mayors
Against Illegal Guns, and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
It has been spending tens of millions of dollars on political
operations.
Now its attention
is on Oregon, where the state Legislature narrowly failed to pass
legislation two years running to require background checks for private
gun sales.
According to state
records, Everytown spent nearly $600,000 on the 2014 election —
$450,000 in contributions to candidates and committees, and $110,000 on
other grassroots efforts.

Democrats
ended up expanding their majority by two seats to 18-12 in the Senate.
The party holds a stronger majority in the House. Gov. John Kitzhaber, a
Democrat, is a longtime supporter and is expected to sign the bill if
it passes.
"There's a loophole there that can be closed," said Lamb.Oregon voters extended background checks to require them for sales at gun shows in 2000.
Senate
Judiciary Chairman Sen. Floyd Prozanski, D-Eugene, plans to introduce
legislation to expand that to private gun sales. The bill would require
anyone selling a gun privately to call state police for a background
check on criminal history and mental illness. It would exclude sales
among family members, inheritances and antique guns.

Opponents include Democratic state Sen. Betsy Johnson of Scappoose and the National Rifle Association.
"The NRA is not privy to the specifics of the legislation, but Oregonians should not be fooled by the rhetoric from out of state gun control groups funded by New York billionaire Michael Bloomberg," NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker said in a statement. "They are pushing an extreme anti-gun agenda that seeks to curtail Oregonians' constitutional right to self-defense."
Under
federal law, background checks through the National Instant Criminal
Background Check System are required for sales by licensed gun dealers,
but not at gun shows or private transactions. The checks target
convicted felons, people under indictment, the mentally ill, drug users,
people under restraining orders, dishonorably discharged veterans and
people in the country illegally. But not all states report mental health
records to the system.
About 40 percent of Oregon households have guns. And the state has had its share of horrifying shootings.

In
2012, three days before the deadly Newtown, Connecticut, school
shooting, Jacob Tyler Roberts took a stolen semi-automatic AR-15 rifle
to the Clackamas Town Center mall outside Portland, where he killed two
people and wounded one before killing himself.
Last June, high
school freshman Jared Michael Padgett took his brother's assault-style
rifle to school. He killed a student and wounded a teacher before
killing himself.
None of those shootings would have been stopped by background checks, said Johnson, the key opponent of last year's bill.
"It
puts law abiding citizens at a significant disadvantage," she said.
"And it does not touch the problem, which in most cases involves
severely mentally ill, disaffected, alienated young people causing
mayhem."
These people will never, ever stop-unless we allow them to attain their goal of a complete ban on all civilian ownership of firearms.
They are going to keep doing this shit state by state, and every state that they succeed in passing "universal background checks" and/or "safe storage" laws,CAP laws, banning "assault rifles" and on and on-we will have no gun rights.
Gun owners HAVE to get involved,we have to stop these people, they have succeeded in finding a weak point-and they are going all out with their offensive. So far, they won in Washington state, and are working on Nevada,Oregon and Vermont, and they will keep going, even if they lose in one state-they are just going to go down their list, putting as many as they can in the W column.
They know they can't this bullshit passed in DC,that's why they're going state by state, and going all out with their propaganda campaign before gun owners even find out they have filed the paperwork to get this horsepucky on the ballot.
Anyone who lives in any of the states that Bloomberg and Ms. Watts attack needs to get everyone they know to call, write, and e-mail their state representatives as soon as it's discovered these enemies of the Constitution and our rightful liberty are trying to impose these draconian measures on others because of their hoplophobia, and their dreams of everything suddenly being rainbows, unicorns, puppies and butterflies if they could just ban guns.
The rest of the states on their list...

Knife Sharpening
Since I’ve spent a considerable amount of time butchering deer for
guys lately-90% of them had knives so dull they couldn’t be used-which
is why I always bring my own if going to someone else’s home to cut up
their deer.
Guys have handed me these “really great game processing knives and tools” that they wasted their $50.00-$75.00 or more on,and the pieces of crap wouldn’t cut through a cake without tearing it up.
Sharpening a knife is not all that complicated,it ain’t rocket science, you don’t need an engineering degree to get your knives sharp and keep them sharp.
You need a few basic things-a set of sharpening stones-( whetstones)-a butcher’s steel-a real one,not the 8-10″ pieces of shit that come with the equally useless knives in the wooden block on most people’s kitchen counters-an 18″ butcher’s steel-go to any restaurant supply store, any store that sells top quality cutlery,or order one online.
Lastly, you should have ceramic sharpening “sticks’-either the sticks that go in a wood block,or the inexpensive plastic sharpeners that have carbide sticks on one side, and ceramic on the other.
I have a tri-hone set of 3 sharpening stones made by Smith’s,it’s a coarse,a medium, and a fine stone, attached to a triangle shaped piece of wood that rests in notches in the wood base-you just turn it to whatever stone you need,as you do not always need to start with the coarse stone, sometimes you just need to “touch up” a blade.
I have a real butcher’s steel, have had the same one for 35 years or so,got it way back when I was a line cook, before I finished the apprenticeship and became an executive chef.
I’m on my 3rd tri-hone,they seem to last about 10 years-less if you’re keeping a bunch of knives sharp as you’re running a kitchen in a country club.
I use a small sharpener that has carbide and ceramic “sticks” ,along with a diamond coated, tapered rod for sharpening serrated blades.
The key to sharpening your knives is to be able to hold the same angle every time as you move the knife across the stone. If you can not do that-cut yourself some wood wedges, and hold those under the blade.
You want to use a 20-25 degree angle-( 20-25 degrees for each bevel-or a 40-50 degree inclusive angle)- for knives used to butcher game animals, mine always seem to end up at around 22.5-23 degrees, which works fine for me,if I need something more like a razor blade edge,I use a flatter angle-closer to 18-20 degrees-which is what I use for my filet knives.
As long as your knife blades are not full of nicks,or have chunks missing, you should only need 10-15 strokes on each side, starting with the coarse stone and repeated for the med. and fine stones, follow that up with 8-10 strokes on each side on the steel.

How to Shoot a Rifle Offhand
Shooting from your hind legs like a man (or a woman, or whatever makes your heart happy) is by far the most difficult of all the positions.
Article by David E. Petzal
Beliefs that my generation held as sacred are now null and void. If
Capt. John Paul Jones were asked to surrender today, he would not answer
“I have not yet begun to fight” but “Let’s work this out. Violence is
never the answer, and all these dead bodies in the ocean are an
environmental hazard.”
Also, we can’t seem to shoot offhand anymore. We no longer walk; we
sit. And thanks to the current long-range craze, the idea of sneaking to
get a closer shot at something is as alien as going afield without four
electronic devices that you consult every two and a half minutes.Stand and Deliver
Shooting from your hind legs like a man (or a woman, or whatever makes your heart happy) is by far the most difficult of all the positions. It requires exponentially more practice than any other simply to be competent, never mind good. And it is still absolutely necessary to master, unless you enjoy papering the walls of your home with unpunched licenses.
Offhand, Easily, Sort Of
The secret to shooting offhand is to accept that no one can hold a rifle steady while perched on his hind legs. No one. So don’t try to eliminate muzzle movement; instead, control it. Develop the finesse to make the end of the barrel move in a circle and to make that circle smaller and smaller as you aim. Then, the instant the crosshairs are on any part of the bull’s-eye, pull the trigger. Crude as this approach may seem, a great many of your shots will land in the center of the bull anyway.
The other thing you must do is shoot fast—because bucks won’t stand around waiting for you. An aimed offhand shot should take you no more than five seconds, and three is better. The longer you wait, the more likely you’ll screw up.
The Range Regimen
Here’s how to practice shooting offhand: Get a .22 rifle, as close a match to your centerfire as possible. Get as much ammo as you can buy, beg, or extort. Get a package of 100 NRA A-17 paper targets, each of which has 11 black bull’s-eyes about the size of a silver dollar.
Set your scope at 4X and start from 20 feet. Shoot strings of five rounds per bull; a hit anywhere in the black counts. Zero hits through two is pathetic; three is so-so; four is not bad at all; and five is outstanding. Your initial efforts are likely to be so bad that you will go into shock and require hospitalization.
As you improve, move back to 25 yards. Once you are shooting mostly fours and fives, switch to your centerfire rifle, and shoot from 100 yards at an NRA 50-yard pistol target with an 8-inch bull. Shoot no more than 20 rounds per session, and try to get all of them in the black. Very few shooters can do this; if you can get 18 or 19 into the 10-ring, you’ve done very well.
Finally, remember two things: First, practicing offhand is logistically easier, cheaper, and more valuable to real hunters than practicing at long range will ever be. So there’s no excuse not to do it. Second, shooting is a sport of muscle memory, repptitian, and concentration, so shoot lots. And good luck getting the .22 ammo.

Bloomberg Moms’ political spots relied on deceptive voter manipulation
Bellicose
Demanding Moms have proven as easy to dupe and exploit -- by pushing
emotional buttons and letting their ignorance do the rest -- as
Obamacare supporters.
Employing the same cynical political strategy and contemptuous duping of "stupid" voters as Obamacare promoters, Michael Bloomberg’s Moms Demand Action relied on deception to exploit ignorance, prejudices and fears in the midterm elections, a Gun Rights Examiner analysis of social media messages on TPM Livewire
demonstrates. The professionally-produced “Explain Your A” campaign
featured in the story targeted three Republican candidates who had
received high marks from the National Rifle Association: Carl Domino of
Florida, Paul Chabot of California, and Larry Kaifesh of Illinois.
“Does your A grade from the NRA mean you support gun rights for suspected terrorists?” the attack on Domino read. Along with his picture, the Moms included a photo of Al Qaeda’s American-born propaganda tool, Adam Gadahn, whose previous affiliations in the “gun control” debate were with anti-gunners shamelessly exploiting another lie, that full-auto weapons could be bought without background checks and IDs at U.S. gun shows.
“Does your A grade from the NRA mean you support the rights of felons to buy and own guns?” the hit piece on Chabot asked. His portrait was paired with a heavily tattooed prisoner behind bars.
“Does your A grade from the NRA mean you oppose taking guns from domestic abusers?” the smear against Kaifesh insinuated. Accompanying his picture was the image of a distraught, heavily-mascaraed woman with her fists clenched against her cheeks suggestive of both Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” and MacCaulay Culkin in “Home Alone.” For some unexplained reason, the model in the staged photo shoot has what appears to be masking tape across her mouth -- either that or she’s wearing a turtleneck like Mort from “Bazooka Joe” comics. With these crazy MILMs, who the hell knows?
“If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers,” novelist Thomas Pynchon noted in “Gravity’s Rainbow.” In this case, the minds behind the Moms ask those questions for us in order to manipulate emotions and suppress critical examination. After all, who wants terrorist, gangbangers and wife-beaters shooting victims?
The targets of the misleading Bloomberg hit pieces are enabling nothing of the sort, of course. And nothing being demanded would stop the bad guys anyway.
If a person is a known threat, public safety demands he be apprehended. If he’s only a suspected threat, there’s this little protection we’re supposed to have called due process, where people get a trial, are proven guilty and are sentenced. What they’re going for here is a “terror watch list” for guns, as if tipping off those who are under surveillance makes for smart intelligence work. What they’re also going for is people who are not in custody being stripped of fundamental rights and liberty, not that the Bill of Rights means anything when you‘re a “progressive” with an agenda to shove down throats. Besides, there’s another, bigger deception going on: These people are using fear of an Al Qaeda boogeyman to justify deprivation of liberties they really want extended to those they paint as domestic terrorists – that is, anyone who believes the right to keep and bear arms is a legitimate deterrent to tyranny, and in a last-resort right to rebellion.
OK, but what about felons, that is, people who have already received their due process? We’ll put aside my longstanding contention that anyone who can’t be trusted with a gun can’t be trusted without a custodian, and focus on the way things are. Such criminals are already prohibited by law from having a gun – for all the good that does at stopping them. What the Bloombergians want here is to end all lawful (!!!) private sales and transfers, done under another deception as we’re seeing unfold in Washington State, so-called “universal background checks.” And yes, of course they’re aware that the National Institute of Justice produced a “Firearm Violence Prevention Strategies” report in which it concluded “Effectiveness depends on the ability to reduce straw purchasing, requiring gun registration...”
So of course what they really want is gun registration (something the gun-grabbers know felons are exempted from, because requiring it of them would violate their right against self-incrimination). If all they really intended was to ensure recipients of firearms transfers were legally eligible, “common sense gun safety advocates” would be promoting a Blind Identification System, which could verify no legal impediment to a transfer exists but record no information identifying either gun buyers or what they purchased. And, again of course, the real reason they want registration is to facilitate confiscation.

‘Exigent circumstances,’ warrantless searches and lethal force
"If a police officer is illegally attempting to enter your home, should you be legally permitted to use force to prevent him from doing so? It’s a difficult question. You don’t want to make people think they have license to decide at the scene that a search is illegal, use force against cops and then end up with casualties. Even if it were unquestionably legal, it certainly wouldn’t be advised. But the alternative is to say that citizens should be legally required to submit to illegal searches and hope that the courts will rule in their favor later. Even if the subject of the illegal search were to later win in court, which is hardly a given, an illegal search can have immediate and irreversible consequences."
