Coroner: Teen killed by police in Illinois shot in back

ZION, Ill. (AP) — An autopsy has revealed that a teenager killed by a police officer in Illinois over the weekend was shot twice in the back, authorities said Monday.
Justus Howell was shot by Zion police on Saturday afternoon. Police say officers responding to a call about an altercation began chasing a male when he ran from the scene. They say that after the teen was shot, officers recovered a handgun.
The Lake County Coroner's Office said in a statement Monday that one bullet struck the 17-year-old in the left back and penetrated his heart, spleen and liver. Another bullet struck him on the right side of his back. Tests to determine whether drugs were in the victim's system are pending.
The Zion police chief didn't return calls Monday seeking comment about the autopsy results. Zion is a community of about 24,000 people along Lake Michigan about 45 miles north of Chicago, near Illinois' border with Wisconsin.
Howell was black and his relatives contacted the NAACP asking its officials to speak on their behalf, according to Lake County NAACP president Jennifer Witherspoon. She says Howell's relatives are hoping to find out exactly what happened as quickly as possible.
"Whether it was a mistake on his part or a mistake on the police's part, they want answers to make sure something like this never happens again," she said.
The teen's death comes months after an unarmed black 18-year-old was shot and killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, an incident that sparked protests and heightened concerns about how minorities are treated by police around country. Police in Zion haven't provided any details on the officer involved in Howell's shooting, including the officer's race.
"Here in America we are seeing this with too many brown and black boys," said Witherspoon, who added she was encouraged that Zion police quickly handed the investigation over to the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
Family members gathered Sunday near the site of the shooting to pay tribute to Howell.
Howell, was a high school junior who transferred from a school in Wisconsin to Waukegan Public School District 60, spokesman Nick Alajakis told the Chicago Tribune.
Alajakis said the teenager attended the Lakeshore Academy, a privately-operated school that takes students from the district and, according to the district's website, serves academically struggling students.

‘Armed American Radio’ launches ‘Daily Defense’ program

Via David Codrea

Mark Walters, host of the weekly nationally-syndicated “Armed American Radio” program, began broadcasting “Daily Defense” Monday afternoon, a newly-redesigned AAR website informed listeners and fans. The one-hour Monday through Friday program is in addition to the three-hour program that airs every Sunday.
“I’m extremely excited to be filling your prescription for freedom on a daily basis,” Walters announced. “If you’re a fan of the wildly popular Sunday evening broadcast then you’re already aware of topic specific talk radio…usually reserved for weekend programming.”
“Mark brings hard hitting talk about the right to bear arms for self defense to the nation’s airwaves,” Salem Radio Network, the distributor for “Armed American Radio” and “Daily Defense” noted. “A one of a kind program focusing on the right to carry concealed handguns, safety and training, politics and everything else related to the right to bear arms for self preservation, Mark interviews some of the biggest nationally recognized names in the field of self-defense and tells the truth about concealed carry that the mainstream media simply ignores.”
The addition of daily programming will allow for breaking news to be discussed in a timelier manner than the once-a-week schedule has previously allowed. Meanwhile, the weekly three-hour show will still allow for multiple issues, guests and in-depth explorations of topics. Together, the programs will complement each other and fill a largely untapped market niche.
“Armed American Radio’s Daily Defense with Mark Walters” is being distributed in several markets nationwide, the AmmoLand website reported. Walters told Gun Rights Examiner in a telephone interview this afternoon that a listing of stations carrying the new program, including local variations in airing times, will be forthcoming. Until then, listeners can access the program by clicking “Listen Live” on the AAR website, weekdays at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Oregon Sheriff: Gun Control Push ‘Borderline Treasonous,’ Will Not Enforce

While Oregon Democrats stood with Gabby Giffords and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence to push expanded background checks on April 1, Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer stood for the law-abiding citizens whom the checks will target by describing the gun control push as “borderline treasonous.”

Palmer also made clear that if the Democrats pass the measure there is zero chance of his office enforcing it.
Breitbart News previously reported that the push for expanded background checks in Oregon is being spearheaded by state senator Floyd Prozanski (D-Eugene). His efforts are strongly supported by the Brady Campaign and Giffords.
Giffords, in particular, believes every potential gun purchaser should have to pass the same background check her attacker passed to acquire his firearm, which the same background check Jerad and Amanda Miller (Las Vegas), Aaron Ybarra (Seattle Pacific University), Elliot Rodger (Santa Barbara), Ivan Lopez (Fort Hood 2014), Darion Marcus Aguilar (Maryland mall), Karl Halverson Pierson (Arapahoe High School), James Holmes (Aurora theater), Nidal Hasan (Fort Hood 2009), and many, many others passed to get the guns they used in their crimes.
The irony is not lost on Sheriff Palmer, who sees the push for expanded background checks as just another way to infringe on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens without impacting crime or criminals. For these reasons, Oregon Live said Palmer described the push as “borderline treasonous.”
Moreover, Palmer said the background checks pose a nightmare scenario for law enforcement officers who will be straddled with the responsibility of determining when a background should have been done but was not, as well as when a background check is not necessary to begin with.
Palmer said he has “no intention” of enforcing Prozanski’s bill if it becomes law.

Musings of an LFA III% Member

by | Apr 2, 2015 |

There are a hundred ways to speak of the fire that burns in the hearts of patriots in this nation. Those who are seeking those of like mind can see it, spreading like a wildfire across a parched forest. Those who do not understand it are afraid of it, for it signifies something they cannot grasp and do not have the intestinal fortitude to stomach.  Liberty for All (LFA III%), the hardcore patriot group in Washington State, may be the tip of the spear, but there are many others throughout this nation who have been in the trenches for decades.
There are those who dismiss us, who claim that standing the line is stupid or even dangerous.  They claim we are setting back the liberty movement, or that we don’t know what we’re doing.  We are crazy, we are arrogant, we are self-absorbed—or so the stories go. There are days it seems that there is no end to the accusations and the backbiting.  At times, I find myself attempting to defend that which needs no defending.  It is a difficult lesson to realize, but time spent defending this fight to those with no concept of its necessity is, quite simply, time wasted.
The truth is, I have seen the men and women who stand next to me.  I have looked in their eyes and seen their hearts.  They are not crazy, and they are not fools.  There is a kind of soul that already knows how this ends.  There is a kind of heart that sees the cost before it comes, and offers to pay it even still.  For some of us, this cause is not a hobby.  It is not drum beating, or attention seeking.  It is not something we believe—it is something we are.  We could no more lay down and accept this tyranny than the blabbering sheep can rise to fight.  In the bottom of our souls, we know we were created for more than subjects in a kingdom, more than a commodity to be controlled and managed.  We were born free.
We were born to fight.
The naysayers will always be there; the loyalists of our time will always seek to justify their inaction and even their blatant cowardice.  The fence sitters will always find a reason to stay settled where they are, constantly trying to figure out which side of the fence is more advantageous to be on at any given time.  Eventually, they too will be left without a place to sit.  Tyranny does not give special treatment to those who help its growth; soon enough even those who called for caution and denigrated us will have to recognize their own chains.
In the meantime, the patriots continue to stand.  We continue to push forward, to dare things not seen in this country in over 200 years.  We seek no glory, but we do demand liberty; its pursuit will not be stopped for anything.  For us, there is no other option.  Our Constitution unites us, and the truth that men are born to be free will bind us together in this fight, come what may.  We will stand with each other, and while every single day we pray that it never comes to violence, if it comes we will stand through that as well.  And if the sun rises on a day when we are asked to give our lives in the defense of this absolute truth, we will do so…without hesitation.
Even so, know this:  we will not go quietly.  We will not go easily.  We will go filthy and stained, with the blood of those whose appetite for our liberties pushed them past a line from which there is no coming back.  We will go with as many tyrants as we can take with us.
We will never shoot first; we will not cross the line into violence. Our creed does not make us monsters; it makes us defenders. But if we are pushed, we will fight, and we will fight until we are dead.  And in the wake of our deaths, others will rise and fight in our place, and eventually we will win.  Even in death, we will win, because death is always more desirable than slavery.
There are a hundred ways to say all of this; pretty words and glorious imagery that evoke emotions that most people have forgotten how to feel.  But when all is said and done, it can all be summed up in one rallying cry.  One basic concept that holds within it the promise to all tyrants that any attempt on our lives will result in the fight—and the end—of their own, for there will be no more free Ruby Ridge incidents, no more free Wacos, no more free bloodshed.  One simple statement that every patriot understands in the core of their very bones.
We will not comply.
We stand.

Runaround: DHS to Purchase Access to License Plate Databases

According to a Federal Business Opportunities report posted today, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) division of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is planning to solicit proposals for a “license place commercial data reader service” later this month.
An official DHS statement says that the Department is not attempting to set up its own database, but to instead query existing data held in commercially available license plate reader databases.
That statement continues, saying:    https://readfomag.com/2015/04/runaround-dhs-to-purchases-access-to-license-plate-databases/

First Case of Exotic Chewing Lice Found in Colorado Deer

 Via outdoorhub.com

Lice (like this human head louse) can result in severe hair loss for deer.

On Wednesday Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) confirmed that a young mule deer found east of Denver was infested with exotic chewing lice, a species similar to the lice that is responsible for the widespread deer “hair loss syndrome” found in other states. The affected male fawn was put down by a wildlife officer after it was found by a local rancher. Wildlife officials described the animal as “being in poor body condition and struggling to survive.”
Laboratory results confirmed the species of lice as Bovicola tibialis on March 19. Biologists believe that the lice may be linked to the Eurasian louse that has been affecting deer in Washington, which causes hypersenstivity in American deer and could lead to excessive grooming, hair loss, and ultimately death. According to Washington officials, the lice first cropped up sometime in the mid 1990s and has grown to be a significanct factor of mortality for blacktail deer. Since the lice appeared, officials estimated that isolated deer populations in Yakima and Kittitas counties have declined by at least half.
Colorado biologists say they are treating the matter seriously.
“CPW is examining deer in Colorado to determine the extent of the disease and possible effects on deer,” the agency stated. “Anyone who observes sick wildlife is always encouraged to report it to CPW.”
Elk and other animals are also known to be affected by the lice, but so far have not developed hair loss resulting from infestation. Whitetail deer and mule deer in Washington have also not been exposed to the lice, but as the case in Colorado suggest, may also be negatively affected by the louse.

“Area ranchers and landowners need not be alarmed by this new strain of lice,” said Dr. Karen Fox, CPW wildlife pathologist. “It is not transmissible to humans or domestic animals. Only deer are affected.”
